When Capcom announced that the Street Fighter 5 DLC characters would be attainable with in-game currency, along with the option to use actual money, fans seemed to be relieved. However, like in a free-to-play mobile game, earning a lot of in-game currency isn’t as easy as it seems.
According to an article from Destructoid, one DLC character in Street Fighter 5 costs 100,000 in-game currency or fight money, as the game calls it. Players get 10,000 fight money for clearing the game’s relatively easy story mode and 6,000 when clearing survival mode with one character. They also get 50 when beating opponents online, with more fight money given if they level up their character.
Since the game has 16 characters to clear story mode and survival mode with, fans should be able to afford one or two of these DLC characters before Alex arrives next month. It’s admittedly not a perfect system, but Capcom should be commended for letting players get Street Fighter 5 DLC for free.
That being said, fans who want some of the game’s costumes from the store might get frustrated. The costumes from story mode, like Ryu’s Street Fighter Alpha attire and Chun-Li’s police outfit, cost 40,000 fight money, so they’re affordable. On the other hand, premium costumes will cost Zenny, which can only be obtained by spending real-life money.
Now costumes are just superficial at best, so those who are more concerned about getting new characters won’t mind not having too many. Those who do want the premium costumes will have to pay with real money though, which is pretty disappointing.
Players who want the six Street Fighter 5 DLC characters right away can simply buy the season pass for US$29.99. This gives players instant access to Alex, Juri, Balrog, Ibuki, Orien and Guile once they come out, though it’s not clear if it will give players Zenny for premium costumes.
