An emerging research reveals the first proof that there is a psychological link between people who perceive themselves as poor and overeating. The new study by Dr. Boyka Bratanova, a lecturer from St. Andrews, suggested that individuals consume more calories to “self-soothe” when they feel anxious of not being equal to others.  She stated that her research produced the first evidence that obesity can be caused by poverty and inequality through the escalation of consumption of high-caloric food and that a psychological process connects these economic and emotional conditions to eating behavior. This study thus believes that to soothe social anxiety, people tend to eat foods high in sugar and fat. Researchers conducted two studies to extract the result. In the first study, poverty and measured inequality were experimentally manipulated, while in the second one, the reverse was done. Results reveal that individuals who belonged to the group induced to feel poor ate 54% on average more food than those who belonged to the group induced to feel wealthy. In addition, the individuals who classified themselves as belonging to lower socioeconomic background were inclined to worry that they would be looked down by others, thus associated with a rise in caloric intake. Dr. Bratanova is hoping that these findings will be used to readjust the course of actions intended for the prevention and treatment of obesity.  “Taken together, the poor in a society seem to have it the worst – they carry the burden of poverty, suffer emotionally from relative deprivation, pay higher proportion of their incomes in consumption tax, and feel guilty and inadequate because of their eating behaviour.” She added that addressing the main sources, poverty and inequality, would be the conclusive solution the obesity crisis and overeating behaviors.
