Robert De Niro Takes Down Anti-Vaccine Documentary From Tribeca Film Festival

Robert De Niro confirmed that the anti-vaccine documentary “Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe” will no longer be shown in the Tribeca Film Festival. Supposed to be out in April, the film was opted to spur further discussions on whether vaccines are needed or not. Vaccines used to be associated with the development of autism. However, no concrete medical evidence and research have established this claim to be factual. De Niro, founder of the prestigious film festival, explained, “My intent in screening this film was to provide an opportunity for conversation around an issue that is deeply personal to me and my family. But after reviewing it over the past few days with the Tribeca Film Festival team and others from the scientific community, we do not believe it contributes to or furthers the discussion I had hoped for.” The film was created by Andrew Wakefield, lead author of the anti-vaccine study. In 2010, Wakefield’s medical license was revoked. This added to the lack of credibility and transparency to the film and its reference study.Like us on Facebook 4 Facts About Vaccines As Doctor Urges To Give It Prime Importance Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, applauded the board’s decision not to show the film and its ‘discredited ideas’. Apparently, the information highlighted on the film had been already disproved by the medical community back in 2000. “We’re all for ongoing reasonable debate and discussion, but these are ideas that have been proven to be incorrect many, many, many times over the past 15 years,” Dr. Schaffner added. Medical experts also shared their thoughts on the issue. “Unless the Tribeca Film Festival plans to definitively unmask Andrew Wakefield, it will be yet another disheartening chapter where a scientific fraud continues to occupy a spotlight,” Dr. Mary Anne Jackson, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Meanwhile, the Tribeca Film Festival board did not give any further comment after De Niro’s official statement. Photo: Libymax/The Children’s Clinic
