EAST ST. LOUIS, ILL. – Jose Serrano, 50, of East St. Louis, Ill. is fighting extradition to Ashdown where he faces a 2006 charge of allegedly raping a young girl.
Serrano is being held in an Illinois jail pending extradition proceedings that would bring him back to Arkansas to stand trial on the charge.
Little River County Assistant Prosecutor Jay Metzger said he had discussed Serrano’s extradition with an Illinois prosecutor “and he assured me that everything was going on schedule.”
Metzger said Gov. Mike Beebe has issued a warrant for Serrano and “it’s in Illinois’ hands.”
“I’m confident that we’re going to be able to go and get him,” Metzger said.
In Arkansas, rape is a Class Y felony, punishable by 10-40 years to life in the Arkansas Department of Correction.
